La Società Dante Alighieri was founded in 1889 in Rome, Italy. Its aim is to foster the Italian language and culture in the world, reviving the links of Italians with their homeland, and promoting amongst other peoples, an interest in Italian civilisation, language and culture. There are branches around the world where there are Italian communities or an interest in Italian language and culture. The Dante Alighieri Society of Liverpool was originally formed in 1951 and is one of the oldest Dante Alighieri societies in the UK.
