German Culture Sunday: 180 years German Church in Liverpool

Did you know that the German Church Liverpool’s history goes right back to the first half of the 19th century, with German-language services being held in the city even before a formal parish existed?

Did you know that our parish was officially founded in 1846, and this year we are joyfully celebrating its 180th anniversary?

Did you know that in the early 20th century the German Church in Liverpool had around 1,000 members, making it one of the largest German-speaking congregations in England outside London at the time?

Did you know that the church and its community went through a very challenging periods during both the First and Second World Wars, yet continued to be a place of faith, fellowship and resilience?

Did you know that the current church building on Bedford Street South, at the corner of Canning Street, was built in 1959 after the original structure on the same site had to be taken down due to German bombing damage?

Did you know that the church’s distinctive tower and community hall were added later, in 1964 and 1971 respectively, reflecting the growth of the congregation and its outreach?

Did you know that today our parish embraces people from Merseyside, the Wirral and neighbouring parts of North Wales and Cheshire, and forms part of the Pastoral Region North England & East Midlands under the care of Pastor Christa Hunzinger?

Did you know that alongside worship services, the German Church has long been a centre of cultural life, hosting excursions, concerts, talks, family and singing retreats, film meetings, lantern parades, summer fetes and Christmas bazaars?

Did you know that within the community hall you’ll find one of the best selections of German children’s books in Liverpool, and a warm space for play groups, café gatherings and fellowship?

Did you know that all of this — from tradition and transformation to friendship and cultural celebration — is part of a remarkable story we would love to share with you at our special talk on the history of the German Church Liverpool?
